Like CQWW RTTY a month ago, the bands were hotter than expected. Not up to solarmax standards but working Europe on 15M at this point felt pretty good. Hoping for similar a month from now for the CW leg. Put in 21 hours -- more than expected after a very, very poor performance on opening night. Surprisingly, Saturday and Sunday were tons 'o fun here, all things considered. It was still the worst outing since 2009, but some nice double-mults -- TR6 and JT5 stand out -- and some activity on 15M made it feel good anyway. As I predicted (pretty safely) in the pre-contest podcast last week, 15M surely made the difference in competitive scores from out west. Those who found any openings on 10M as well will do even better, but I didn't hear a peep up there any time I listened around. Had a real blast running stations on 20M in the final two hours, but the pace was so frantic I stepped away with half an hour left, once I hit 1,200 Qs for a nice round number to finish with. With multipliers down so much for me this year, I wasn't going to catch any high-watermark scores from the past several years. Weaknesses to address next spring: 40M with a rotary dipole and a half-assed fixed-direction 2-el quad in the pine trees doesn't cut it for working Europe from here. Heard too many much-needed S9+20 zone 14, 15, 16 and 20 stations who didn't even pause when I called. More 40M elements ought to solve that. The 80M triangle array of verticals worked as well as can be expected for a system tuned for the CW end of the band. It's rather compromized above 3.700 Mhz. Never got the elevated radials upgraded this summer, and they're far from ideal. Another spring project. Thanks to all who got on for a bunch or a few Qs. Those 2-pointers across the border make this one a lot of fun.
