Last time I participated in this contest was in 2013. What a difference in
conditions over four years! My personal best for that contest was 1335 QSO's
and 1296 QTC's for a score of 1,951,592. This year conditions were fair at
best with 20M closing early every evening. Also, this year I had a church
function I had to attend so I was not able to get on until after 2PM on
Sunday.

I did struggle with the QTC thing with the software I was using in that it had
to have perfect copy when I was receiving QTC's. If I had to request repeats
about half the time I messed something up, my software would hang, and I would
lose what QTC's I had already "clicked" into the QTC window. I had
much better luck sending them. My apologies to everyone who experienced this
with me. Other than that I had fun and it was nice to hear all the PVRC
members on for this test!

Well:
1) DO NOT Start Late - Could not get RTTY Interface working on WL
2) DO NOT Use N1MM Logger Plus that is 785 days old. It was terribly buggy and
eventually I stopped and loaded the newest version and all the bugs went away
like someone had sprayed the shack with RAID!

Bands were awful and when the numbers (A&K) started to look better, EU was
closed and the JAs had all gone to work.

Thanks for those that tried - I missed about a dozen or more of you due to N1MM
foibles so sorry.

:) (Not that there were many willing to send. When you are weak and difficult to
receive others seem to think you will have difficulty receiving them? Not
necessarily the case.)

Terrible conditions. In my diary I've renamed this WAE (Worked All Europe) and
called it HWAE (Hardly Worked Any Europe).

So there is nothing but the truth in: "As usual, it's the emptiness of a
giant arctic ice floe out there... when you are running low power to a
vertical." :)

40M/80M DX conditions very poor to Northern EU after sundown. 40M just passable
before sundown.

20M very good to JA Saturday night.

Every time, see a new mult to pop up via skimmer and K1MK and I were in the
pileup together with him almost always getting it first :-).

Interestingly 10 minutes before end of test I get called by a Sardinian for a
new mult on 40M and he wants to chat. This seemed kinda familiar - looked in my
log from last year and exact same thing happened, exact same time, exact same
guy!

Almost all Q's made while running with just a few S&P Q's.

Most QTC were received rather than sent.
Low power meant most EU stations preferred to send rather than receive QRC's.

Thanks for the Q's.

From the WA3EKL Contest Crew. We noticed the conditions were not quite as good
as last weekend with no openings on 10 plus 15 and 20 shut down earlier than
last weekend. We once again were able to train some new operators in the fine
art of RTTY contesting. We ALL learned how to send and receive QTC’s. WENDY
K3TBD took impressive leads in getting the rate steady. Mason KC3IZX has become
a natural in hunting down the elusive multipliers. It really puts him ahead in
the world social studies as he is our 10 year old up and coming leader in
contesting. Do not blink he is not only gaining on you but he is long gone
ahead of the pack. He did take time out as well this weekend for his piano
recital. He is quick to distinguish octaves and tones so look out once he
totally masters CW. Station owners WA3EKL and wife N3DPB spent their 39th
wedding anniversary Saturday night on the radios calling CQ and looking for
multipliers. Susan N3DPB cooked some excellent food while she wasn’t on the
radios or taking care of the three granddaughters. We all had a great and
exhausting time.

Look forward to next year.

13.5 hours on the air. Casual high-power operation due to work chasing me around
all weekend as usual. Missed four hours of the prime-time EU opening Saturday
morning for Remembrance Day service in the city 45 minutes away.

Things slowed down on 20M around 2100z Sunday so I quit early with score and
stats a bit ahead of last year.

First time running the amp in this one since 2008. Don't want to know what it
would have been like as a low-power outing.

Good to see some life left in 15M, though I didn't hear any EU while I was on,
and didn't work any JA mults there either.

JW5E was a great surprise on 40M and 20M. What a signal here in the NA west.
Only EU strong enough to send solid QTCs on Sunday.

Still one of my favorite contests. Fun watching cqcontest.net live contest
updates while the contest is going. I was doing well until church time got me
at 1600Z on Sunday morning, fell way behind then.

N1MM software was killing us! QTC send and especially receive was bad. The
receive kept locking up. Check out the N1MM digital reflector on the Yahoo
group. My computer finally went to the "blue screen of death" about 2
hours before the end of the contest and when I rebooted and restarted, there was
a new version of N1MM out there, but I didn't get it in time to see if it worked
better by receiving any QTC's.

Lost the second radio to a bad coax connector on a spliced line. Got it fixed
Sunday afternoon. Fun contest. Thanks to all that worked me on my 100 watt
signal.

Was able to operation on and off throughout the weekend with about half my total
time on Sunday. First time working this contest and I was totally unprepared
for how to use the QTC interface. Learning that on the fly was quite costly.
I clearly don't know how to properly get the received QTC's from the digital
interface window to the QTC entry window. Once you get an error in that table,
you are really screwed even after getting the "fixed" version of
software. Correcting the jumbled mess I created on each of my received QTC
sets took me 45 minutes. Just avoided receiving QTC's after that. Had one EU
station respond during the correction of QTC's in complete frustration with the
SW and just say forget it after several repeats. I felt his pain and lived it.
I know I left a bunch of QTC points on the table. I'll be better prepared the
next time! I did get to prove out some antenna and station improvements. I
wish my operating times aligned better when the EU stations were workable. So,
I ended up with mostly domestic Q's. Looking forward to the next time.

M6W(G3WW)   Single Op LP   154,4012017-11-13 02:21:15
One of my favourite contests purely because of the QTC fun. Sadly I rarely get
time for the WAEDC, so when the opportunity arose to put a few hours in on
Saturday whilst visiting my OM I took the chance.

The RTTY gear was quite a lash up and very last-minute but got the station
setup just about in time for the midnight start.

Condx as expected were pants with very few DX stations workable with low power
to a vertical but I did find ten non-Europeans who were strong enough to take
QTCs from.

I struggled to find a G multiplier on all bands so don't think there was much
domestic interest in this one.

Win-Test worked flawlessly and for the first time I tried 2Tone by G3YYD
running in parallel with MMTTY. It was fascinating to see the difference
between the two decoders, 2Tone seemingly more selective and better coping with
strong QRM but MMTTY having superior sensitivity handling weaker signals better.
I can't remember asking for a single repeat.

The exchange of QTCs makes for a unique contesting experience.

I did have QTC logging problems early on in the contest which made for some
challenging exchanges when I was on the RX end. A big shout out to Kenny,
AB4GG, who suggested using an older version of the software and that worked FB
for the rest of the contest, both RX and TX.

I did learn that the scrolling QTCs require more monitor "real
estate" for the multiple RX panes in the DI Window... another reason to
spend $$ there.

As someone else mentioned, I wish the EU stations who were probably thinking I
was too weak for QTCs realized that I would have no problem receiving their
QTCs ... they were booming or in the clear here when I asked for them.

A highlight I've come to enjoy in most RTTY contests is having VP8NO call in...
he did that again when I was trying to stir up Qs from SA on 15M.

Thanks to all who worked me.

Rich N1IXF

It was challenging to exchange QTCs with a station on another continent when you
could not hear any stations on another continent. Some of the worst conditions
in some time in Colorado. The solar event that was lingering sure affected 10
and 15 meters. I don't think we worked but a couple of EU stations Friday and
Saturday nights on a normally productive 40 meters. We monitored 10 meters
during the entire contest and heard but one station, a local. Thankfully by
Sunday propagation started to improve however our score is considerably less
than last year. Thanks to all who struggled with repeats of QTCs and reports. A
special thanks to the EU,SA and JA stations for the QTCs in tough conditions. A
fun contest.

Wanted to operate more, but couldn't get started. When I did to it on Sunday
afternoon, I work for an hour and heard no European stations. So, I quit. At
least I gave out a few contacts.

I decided this was the year to learn to QTC, but conditions and N1MM+ conspired
against me.

But there's next year if I still have the motivation. No guarantee on that,
however.

I love WAE-RTTY, but this year I had a very slow start. I woke up at 05:30 UTC,
fresh and ready for a serious LP effort. But Murphy was with me: I discovered
that, when connecting the Band Pass filters for SO2R setup, one radio was going
deaf. I was not in the mood to chase and repair the wrong cables, so I went to
2m and 6 m/EME and work some nice DX via EME. Finally, after moonset, by 11:30
UTC, I managed to have my SO2R working and I rejoined the QTC game.
10 m was completely dead, 15 m was good for multipliers only, but thanks to
20/40/80m activity, I managed to reach 971 QSO-s in 28 hrs. I really appreciate
the patience of DX operators to accept QTC traffic, especially with the poor
propagation. Most people preferred to send QTC-s, but it went OK on my side
using two decoders: MMTTY and 2Tone.
The last comment: I hope that WAEDC managers will revert to old rules, to show
separate results for DX and separate for EU. I just observed the 2017 rules,
with mixed EU/DX categories and mixed results. See you all in the coming
contests! 73, Alex YO9HP

Tough conditions. Software problems with N1MM caused many difficulties for ops
receiving QTCs. Nice opening to the US on Sunday 15:00 for 2 hours on 21MHz.

I have not a clue as to how N1MM scored my results but I'll let the WAE gang
figure it out. Conditions were not good, 20 and 15 were open for short times
and 40 and 80 just didn't turn into much. N1MM had a glitch in the QTC windows
but I figured a work around, although I wanted to send QTC's rather than
receive, afraid that I would get into a bind. There were a few Europeans that
outright cussed out N1MM in their messages to me when it seemed like they fell
asleep but were messing with the QTC window. So, the bad conditions were offset
with a little humor.

Finally feel like I am doing QTC correctly. Did not think the bands were that
good. Was planning to get rid of qtc on 40 Sunday but that did not happen. Have
a new rf problem, locks radio up when pointed due south, move to 150 deg and
every thing is ok.

Conditions on the high bands very poor this year. 80m and 40m were the
"money" bands for me. Sadly N1MM+ logger problems receiving QTCs
caused me to give up after only a few. But it's fixed now so next year I will
exchange more QTCs.

Maybe next year my working conditions will be better. Operating in a freezing
garage with no door and no heating and wrapped in 2 blankets wasn't so much
fun!

Poor conditions and my lack of a good antenna on 40 & 80 hurt my score.
Deciding to go with the low power category was probably not the greatest idea,
but I still had fun.

If you are not on online score - you missed the fun.
So sad that people watching and orientating with online score - but not
posting.
SO SAD!

This was a last minute remote RTTY operation from NX6T in Fallbrook.
I managed RTTY QSOs Saturday & Sunday morning after the bands/JIDX
died. Time was also found on Sunday afternoon to play RTTY.
Because I was running remote, I couldn't make the N1MM QTC method
work, preventing taking advantage of the QTC part of WAE to double
the score. LooK for WQ6X in 2018's WAE contest.
